Iridis is an approved registrar for .gov.uk domains
Registering a .gov.uk domain is different to registering a CO.UK domain as the process requires a manual application to be submitted to the Joint Information Systems Committee, more often known as JISC. Unlike a .co.uk or .com domain an application has to be submitted by an approved registrar such as Iridis.
.GOV.UK domain names may be registered by UK government departments and agencies
When registering a .gov.uk domain there are stricting naming conventions to prevent confusion about the nature of the website. Domains typically have to reflect the official name of the department, organisation or locality they represent.
For example, If ‘Whitesands Bay’ Parish Council wishes to register a domain it could not register ‘whitesands.gov.uk’ as it neither reflects the official name or type of council it represents. Following naming conventions it would be able to choose for example, ‘whitesandsbay-pc.gov.uk’ or ‘whitesandsbayparishcouncil.gov.uk’.
If you have an existing .gov.uk domain name and would like to move from an existing provider it can be transferred to our administrative control including managing renewals.
Iridis do not require you to host the domain even if you transfer it to us.
The registration cost for a .gov.uk domain name is £199.00. This includes two years of registration and the initial non-refundable application fee. Subsequent renewals are £149.00 per two year period.
